Give Your HVAC System the TLC It Deserves

February reminds us to show some love to the things that are important to us. Loving your HVAC system is easy since it helps maintain your comfort and ensures the air in your home is clean and healthy. What better time to give your HVAC system a little TLC than now?

Taking care of your equipment is the key to keeping your home as comfortable and efficient as possible. Regular maintenance can make a world of difference in how your system operates. Here are a few simple ways to give your HVAC system the TLC it needs to run smoothly all year long.

Inspect Air Filters

A great place to start is checking your air filters more regularly. Even if you have high-quality filters designed to last multiple months, you should inspect them monthly for contaminants. If your filter clogs with dust and debris quicker than expected, you may have to change them sooner than recommended to keep your system running efficiently.

Keep Outdoor Unit Clean

One piece of equipment that always seems to get overlooked is the outdoor AC unit. Over time, these outdoor units will pick up debris around the outdoor condenser coils, which can hinder airflow. Not only will it take the unit longer to cool your home, but it will also lead to wasting energy and spending more money. Here are some tips on how to clean your outdoor unit.

  • Get rid of debris. Turn the unit’s power off at the breaker box. Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fasteners on the cage and lift it off the unit. Remove leaves and any other debris with a vacuum or your hands.
  • Spray the fins. Never use a pressure washer to clean your outdoor unit. Use a garden hose and spray the fins from the inside to loosen up any dirt and debris buildup.
  • Clean around the unit. Anything flammable should be at least three feet away from the unit. Trim down plants and branches that are near the equipment.

Check Thermostat Calibration

You should check the calibration on your thermostat once a year. To do so, tape an accurate thermometer on the wall next to your thermostat. Wait 15 minutes before checking the temperature reading on both devices. You should be good to go if your readings are fewer than three degrees apart. Otherwise, check your thermostat manual to see how you enter the calibration mode and adjust the temperature settings accordingly.
